The Tampere Railway Station

Tampere Central Station, located on the Oulu-Suomenlinna line in central Tampere is one of the main railway stations in northern Finland. It is one of the major railway station in Finland with a modern and classical design, being constructed in 1937 by the architects Eero Seppanel and Otto Flidin. The building consists of a two storey house and a large round white building, named 'Central Station'. The house is separated into the lower part, which has the platform, a small dining room and a bar area, and the upper part, which has the train station office and a number of shops.

Tampere Central Station has a very simple design, with a lot of open space and no overhangs or partitions. The first floor is completely flat and has a high ceiling and many windows. The original design of Tampere station was originally designed in two parts, with the second floor only connecting to the ground at a lower level. It was designed to provide maximum views of the harbour front. A large square space, approximately the same size as the old Central Station, was built at the rear to house the train station office. The roof is open to allow sunlight in through the windows in order to illuminate the train station office. A big room and a basement were also included to house the ticket office and shops. Another important feature of the Tampere station is the bell tower, which is very tall and beautiful looking. It is situated on the second floor. The bell is not yet operational and is scheduled to be opened in summer 2020. It was planned to have a bell that sounds the horn when the train passes by. But the design of the bell tower is still under discussion, and some people are against it since the horn would disturb the natural sound of the bells in the harbour. There is also a museum in the basement of the station, which houses a variety of items, which will form the base of the tourist information centre.
