The Most Important Attractions in Kerala

The name of Leppvirrat is a compound of 'Lep'vir' which means sun in Sanskrit. As the name suggests the sun is the central point of this location, situated about 4 kilometers from Thiruvananthapuram. A well known attraction during Holi celebrations, the Ganges is also known to be the symbol of the Goddess.

The town is named after the village of Leppur Ratnakkalay, where it was originally constructed. It is also the birth place of a significant social icon, who lived to be about ninety-four years old. His name was Sattva Tilak. It is a place where one can take the 'Krishna Purana' or the 'Chandan Purana' at a time of need.

It is said that Lord Krishna and his brother, Arjuna, visited Leppur Ratnakkalay and spent the day there playing with children, and later took a dip in the Ganges. This legend tells us that the Lord did not want to go in for any religious activity, for the reason that it was considered a ritualistic act.

On the contrary, when Lord Krishna and his brother returned to their house, they had no regrets. This is the reason why the Lord chose to spend the rest of his life here. The Ganga has always been revered as the main source of the divine energy and the Lord has repeatedly visited the Ganga to meditate. All the devotees and followers of the Lord to visit the place, and bathe and chant the 'Hindustan' mantra to draw divine energy.

This is one of the most important places in Kerala and Leppur is known for its festivals. There are numerous festivals celebrated here. The most important of these is Bhai Mankini, which is celebrated on the full moon day. Another one is Durga Puja, which is observed from October to March. These festivals are also celebrated at other places in India, which are equally important, such as Kollam, Alleppey, Devikulam and Alleppey.

The people of Leppur are famous for their love towards animals. So, there is a leopard sanctuary here, which is dedicated to Lord Krishna. The leopatra, a kind of monkey, is worshiped. They also love to create miniature houses of the kind which were made by the Lord Krishna and Lord Rama.

The Leppur Ratnakkalay is one of the oldest temples of Kerala and is a major attraction for tourists, as it offers a panoramic view of the whole region. A long procession of elephants is also performed. If you plan to tour this temple, ensure that you dress appropriately as the locals do not permit women to enter this temple in bare feet.

The other attractions in Leppur are the temples dedicated to Lord Krishna and his sister Radha, who have many sculptures all over the temple. There are also many beautiful ponds and lakes that have many fishes. The people in Leppur are extremely happy and grateful towards the Lord, and the whole region is a very peaceful place to visit.
